What Happened to the BDC? Using SharePoint BCS

In the previous version of SharePoint, the Business Data Catalog was a great tool for exposing backend line of business application data into web solutions such as the intranet, extranet or even public facing web sites. With the powerful web parts and the SharePoint search it became a compelling solution for exposing of business content. However there were limitations of the BDC. Microsoft have now addressed these limitations and now released the new SharePoint Business Connectivity Services. This does exactly what the Business Data Catalog did but takes the usage of this to greater heights. With the ability to consume BCS data through not only SharePoint but the Office Interfaces this is now truly an Enterprise Component.

In this session we will look at what you as a Business User, Administrator or even a Developer can do with Business Connectivity Services. Don’t worry we will stay away from the code for this session, well maybe a little bit.

You will learn how to unleash the power of the SharePoint 2010 platform – all without writing a single line of code!  The session will highlight many capabilities of the SharePoint 2010 platform.  We’ll connect to the backend database using Business Connectivity Services using only a wizard in SharePoint Designer.  Then we’ll map a SharePoint External List to the backend database. 

Using document libraries, managed metadata, connected lists, and data views, we will configure a complete application to combining information and knowledge stored in SharePoint with the data stored in the CRM/AMS backend.  Using a real world case study, we will complete a fully functional application used by staff, members, and anonymous users providing immediate results!
